Chapter 22

Bobby

After Ruby went in her room that night and the kids went back to sleep, I tried to decide what to do. I sneaked to the door and looked around for Phyl, but I couldn't find her. I didn't want my mother to come find me at the door, so I tiptoed back to the mattress. I heard shuffling under the house, and after that I heard Phyl crying, very softly. I took off my shirt and dragged myself inch by inch to the hole.

​ Phyl? I whispered.

​ She didn't answer.

​ I lowered my head farther in the hole, thinking about the rattlers and Phyl under there. Phyl , I hissed.

​ Her answer was barely audible.

​ Here's some clothes , I said. Try to get over here closer to the hole. She took the shirt and I passed a blanket to her.

​ But it wasn't that night that made me decide. It was the sheriff coming. He came early the next morning. Maybe they'd had a fight because he went into her room. Ruby came out and told us all to get out of the house. There was a lot of yelling then things quieted down then there were different kinds of noises, kind of like oohing and ahhing and a little laughing.

​ When the sheriff left he cast a glance or two at us, walked to the edge of the clearing, turned his back, and peed in the bushes.

​ That day I started looking.
